Pale on purpose

Two frames, two tints. All four colours are pale, and that is the decision.

Saturated colour is where cheapness comes from

Eyewear starts looking cheap at saturated colour. True blue, true green, true yellow, pure white — any of them reads as plastic the moment the light is poor, no matter what it actually cost to make.

Pale colours do not have that failure mode. In weak light, in photographs, through a cheap phone camera, they never suddenly look downmarket. It is a low-cost choice with a reliable payoff, so we used it on all four.

Space Gray

It reads as more premium than black more easily, which is exactly why we use it. It is also already the colour most people chose for the phone and the laptop on their desk, so it does not fight anything you own.

Light Pink

It is not just for women. The fashion creators we interviewed were startlingly unanimous, and unanimous the other way: a man in pink glasses reads as young and stylish, and the word that kept coming back was "clean". It is warmth, not loudness.

It was the most counter-intuitive and the most consistent piece of feedback in the whole round of interviews.

Light Red Gold

A very pale warm tint, and the most interesting of the four.

In testing it makes the whites of your eyes read whiter and your gaze read clearer. And that effect is not for you — you cannot see it in a mirror. The person who sees it is the one sitting across from you.

A lens colour that changes how other people see your eyes is doing more than a colour that only looks good on a shelf.

Light Gray

The safest one, and there is nothing wrong with that. Neutral, unisex, goes with everything, never the loudest thing in a photograph.

Why the tints are pale too

Because you will not take them off at the door — there is a headset inside them, and you may be on a call or listening to something. So the lens has to be liveable under indoor lighting.

And outdoors you still have to read your phone. A dark lens sends the glasses up onto your forehead every time, and that one push moves the main microphone away from your mouth. A pale lens shades you and leaves the screen readable, and in strong sun you stop noticing the tint is there at all.

No gradients

We asked. The fashion creators were blunt: a gradient reads middle-aged, because it is a band of darkness permanently parked on your face.

Photochromic is the version of the same idea that does not age you — it is not a gradient hanging there all the time, it is a clear lens until it stops being clear.
