A blinking LED, three centimetres from a child's eye, every evening, for a decade.
There is no light anywhere on Razzhood Glasses. No recording light, no battery light, no pairing light. Nothing on the product illuminates, ever, under any condition.
This is the decision people ask about most, so here is the full argument.
On glasses, an indicator sits on the temple. That places it at the edge of your peripheral vision, a few centimetres from your eye, in your field of view for every hour you wear the product. Not glanced at — lived beside.
Anyone who has worn a device with a status LED in that position knows the experience: a red point pulsing at the corner of your sight that you notice a hundred times a day and cannot look at directly. It is not a small annoyance that good industrial design smooths over. It is a permanent low-level irritation, and it is the price of a feature that does nothing for the wearer.
The stronger objection is biological. These are worn outdoors, which includes evening walks, and light at night suppresses melatonin at levels far lower than most people assume.
The literature puts meaningful suppression well under 30 lux, with sensitive individuals responding at around 6 lux, and measurable disruption reported around 3. Children are markedly more sensitive than adults — studies in young children find melatonin dropping by close to eighty percent under modest evening light, and not recovering quickly once the light is removed.
Our intended users include nine-year-olds. Putting a nightly light source a few centimetres from a child's eye, so that a feature can announce itself, is not a trade we are willing to make.
A light that helps nobody in the room and costs the wearer their sleep is not a safety feature. It is a habit.
The usual justification is consent: the light tells other people they are being recorded. It is a reasonable answer for a device that can record other people.
Ours cannot. The main microphone is 4 to 7 centimetres from the wearer's mouth and the reference microphone is twelve centimetres away facing the sky. A voice from half a metre away arrives at both at almost identical levels and falls below the threshold, so it is never written. The geometry does the work.
Which means the light would be indicating something that is not happening. It would be a signal designed to reassure bystanders about a risk the hardware already removed — and it would charge the wearer, nightly, for that reassurance.
Sound and vibration. A short rising tone and a light buzz when a recording begins; a falling tone and a buzz when it ends; nothing at all in between. Rising means starting and falling means stopping, because pitch direction is understood without thinking about it in a way that colour and timbre are not.
Errors get their own tones: three short ones for full storage, one long one at the end of a recording made with no phone connected, an extra tone below ten percent battery. Pairing and factory reset — the only two long-presses in the product — confirm with tones as well.
It is a complete feedback language, and it is invisible in the dark, which is where you want a wearable to be invisible.
